RESPONSE EVENT OVERVIEW

Students will present a design or technology project comprised of materials which clearly tell the story of the process, evolution, and art of the design or technology component. A team of theatre design and technology respondents will serve as selection panelists and respond to the projects in a hybrid experience that includes both LIVE and VIRTUAL DTM Response participants.

Useful supporting materials (across all categories) may include combinations of the following: production photographs, a design statement, research images, preliminary sketches, white models, color models, color sketches, drafting including sections, recording of sound cues and manipulations that lead to compositions, design paperwork, storyboards, costume plates, fabric and trim swatches, costume plot, cue synopsis, tracking sheets, and the like. This is in no way meant to be a definitive list. Participants should choose elements that best articulate and document the conceptual approach, process, and the production.

GENERAL FORMAT FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS

TO THE LIVE DTM EXPO EXHIBIT:

·         All Materials must be displayed on two panels that can not exceed 48” x 48” in size EACH or 4’ x 8’ total.

·         Participants in the Allied Crafts and Technologies Category will be allowed to use a table for display, but must limit the submission of their panel size to 48” x 48.”

·         For design areas other than sound, the use of any electrical device (lights or anything needing an electrical outlet) is not allowed.

·         All design materials must be labeled with: the play title and playwright; act and scene; and the student designer’s name; and photography credit. Wherever possible the name of the designer’s college or university should not be visible on the front of any materials. The designer’s return address should be on the back of each item of the entry.

·         The focus of your exhibit should be on your work. Clean presentations that do not draw attention away from your sketches, photos, research, etc. are recommended. Remember, the respondents have been around the block, and a distracting presentation with lots of hoopla and fringe, etc., will not make them think more highly of your work. A neutral background that is well arranged and clearly and neatly labeled will show your work off better. Generally, respondents like to see your process—research, preliminary sketches, final sketches/models/drafting and if a realized production, production photos. Several good, larger (5” x 7” or 8” x 10”) photos are better than lots of smaller ones that we can’t see very well. Arrange the research, sketches, and if applicable, production photos in a manner in which we can see a clear connection between these different phases of your work.

·         The regional festival, its hosts and volunteers are not responsible for item lost or stolen from the display area or its environs.  Print out photos and other materials.

·         All scenic, costume, lighting, graphics and makeup-design exhibits will be on a 4’ x 8’, 2” thick foam panel. All other projects will sit on ½ of a 8’ long table. Scene Painting may be on either surface. You must not extend your exhibit beyond these spaces.

·         Computers are permitted for sound exhibits only.  No power will be provided except in the sound room.

·         No dimensional materials permitted other than scenic models, as they interfere with sightlines of other exhibits and impede traffic flow through the exhibit. Models and show binders may be exhibited on music stands. Music stands will not be provided, it is the responsibility of the exhibitor to bring a music stand if desired.

·         No dress forms will be provided, it is the responsibility of the exhibitor to bring a dress form if desired.

·         No resumes or business cards with exhibits.

Please Note that 2025 face to face presenters will conduct presentations next to their physical expo display board or table.
